The likely Islam Makhachev vs. Arman Tsarukyan rematch may very well have a different ending, at least according to fellow UFC lightweight Matt Frevola. Speaking to Home of Fight, he touched on the current UFC lightweight title picture, over which Makhachev reigns supreme.

Makhachev and Tsarukyan first faced off back in 2019, with the Dagestani star emerging victorious via unanimous decision in a three-rounder. Despite being declared the victor by all three judges, it was among Makhachev's toughest fights, and Frevola believes there's reason enough to favor Tsarukyan now.

"Their first fight was insane and Arman [Tsarukyan] was so young and he took it on short-notice. So, I think the rematch is definitely gonna be a fun fight and I think Arman could get it done, but Islam [Makhachev] is definitely one of the best in the world, pound-for-pound."

It is worth noting that Frevola has no experience fighting Makhachev, as the two have never shared the octagon. Instead, Frevola previously faced Tsarukyan, who beat him via unanimous decision. Thus, it is only natural that Frevola favors the fighter that beat him.

This is especially true given how closely-contested Tsarukyan's bout with Makhachev was. Not only was it his UFC debut, but he also took the bout on short-notice. Yet, he gave a good account of himself, giving Makhachev his toughest fight until the latter's future bouts with Alexander Volkanovski and Dustin Poirier.

Now, Tsarukyan is hoping to avenge his first loss to Makhachev, but doing so will be a tall order given how much the reigning lightweight champion has improved.

Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan are expected to fight early next year

While reports of a late 2024 rematch between Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan were abound, it appears that they are now set for a clash in early 2025. This is due largely to Makhachev's hand injury delaying the promotion's plans, even though the UFC has not made any official statements.

Both men, though, are game, especially Tsarukyan, as it will be his first crack at undisputed gold in the UFC. Meanwhile, Makhachev will look to successfully defend his belt for a fourth time, which would be the most in the division's history.
