Joe Rogan explains how wolf attacks forced a "ceasefire" between Russians and Germans in WWI 

Joe Rogan recently recalled the infamous wolf attacks that occurred during World War I, which saw a ceasefire between Russian and German soldiers as they looked to combat the animal problem.

In the latest episode of the Joe Rogan Experience (JRE), Rogan welcomed award-winning wildlife biologist Diane K. Boyd. Boyd has spent a number of decades researching and studying wolves and has published books about them.

During the show, the pair discussed a host of topics before focusing on wolves, which saw Rogan recount the story of a wolf problem during WWI. He said:

"The Germans and the Russians had a ceasefire because so many people were getting eaten by wolves...It was researched and found out to be true and an article was written on MeatEater about it...The wolves were aware that people being were being wounded and living in trenches, so they smelled blood and came in, with instances that people were getting dragged out of trenches by packs of wolves."

Whilst the story may seem far-fetched, it is in fact true. Per MeatEater, back in 1917, a large population of wolves had been displaced due to the fighting and so made their way to populated areas of Berlin.

Soon after, during particular skirmishes between Russian and German scouts, large packs of wolves would reportedly interrupt the fighting and attack the wounded. Both sides later agreed to a ceasefire, laying down their arms against one another to focus on the wolves, their new common enemy.

When Joe Rogan stated wolves are the most interesting animal to him

Joe Rogan once revealed that he believes wolves are among the most interesting in all of the animal kingdom.

Back in 2019, Rogan spoke to guest Forrest Galante on episode #1240 of the JRE. Galante is an international wildlife adventurer and conservationist and has first hand experience dealing with wolves whilst out in the wild. The pair's conversation then led to Rogan singing the praises of him the animal, describing them as "majestic." He explained:

"Wolves are probably the most interesting animal in the wild...Real wolves, wolves in Yellowstone and in north-west of the United States, they've gotta be some of the most majestic animals. They operate together, always, as packs. That's where the myth of the werewolf comes from. It's that wolves are so smart, they think that a wolf and a person were combined together."
