Dustin Poirier teases UFC comeback fight against Justin Gaethje with cryptic post

Former interim UFC lightweight champion Dustin Poirier continues to tease fans about what could be the final fight of his legendary career. After losing his second bid at undisputed gold at UFC 302 last June, 'The Diamond' admitted that he's debating retirement in his head.

Ultimately, the Louisiana native elected to push on and have a final run in the octagon before hanging up his gloves for good. Since then it's been a game of guesses on who will dance with Poirier in his potentially final pro MMA fight.

The former interim champ recently teased the fans with a cryptic message:

"Trilogy?"

Only two names come to mind when we associate this word with Poirier's career: Eddie Alvarez and Justin Gaethje. Both men faced 'The Diamond' twice in the past. Former UFC lightweight champ Alvarez is currently not signed with the UFC so he's pretty much out of the picture.

So this leaves us with Gaethje, who is currently 1-1 in his series with Poirier. The two first fought in 2018 in a Fight of the Year-winning bout in which Poirier won via TKO in the fourth round. The second meeting happened five years later, with Gaethje avenging his KO loss with a KO of his own via head kick at UFC 291.

Dustin Poirier shot down rumors of him fighting Colby Covington

One significant name attached to Dustin Poirier for a bit was former interim UFC welterweight champ Colby 'Chaos' Covington. It's uncertain how the idea started floating around but it quickly circulated as a bout between 'The Diamond' and 'Chaos' would sell itself to over a million PPV buys at the very least.

However, in an interview with Fight Bananas, Poirier shot this rumor down like he'd drop his opponents with one shot, saying:

"[Colby] will never make money with me. It's B.S."

A fight between Covington and Poirier would have painted the classic "hero vs. villain" picture, which will sell quite easily to fans. 'Chaos' has no problem playing the antagonist in all his bouts while 'The Diamond' is quite the cordial man but will always hold his ground against men he deems as bullies.
