Alexa Grasso has not returned to the octagon since her controversial split decision draw against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC Fight Night 227 last September. The pair will face each other once again when they clash at UFC 306 this weekend.

The card marks marks the promotion's first trip to the Las Vegas Sphere and is set to pay homage to Mexico's combat sports history in honor of Mexican Independence Day. Additionally, each bout will feature at least one Mexican fighter - aside from the main event between Sean O'Malley and Merab Dvalishvili.

The latter has publicly embraced Mexican culture since his unanimous decision victory over Henry Cejudo at UFC 298 in February. Speaking at the media day for this weekend's card, 'The Machine' was asked if he has worked on his Spanish since his last bout, responding:

"Si. Si. Si, what do you want? You want me to tell you puto or what?"

The women's flyweight champion responded to MMA Fighting's post, stating:

"😂 😂 😂"

Grasso will look to retain her title in her trilogy bout with Shevchenko in the co-main event. Meanwhile, Dvalishvili will have the biggest opportunity of his mixed martial arts career as he challenges O'Malley for the bantamweight crown in the main event.

Alexa Grasso labels Brandon Moreno as an inspiration

Alexa Grasso is just the second UFC fighter born in Mexico to capture a title. She recently labeled Brandon Moreno, who was the first to accomplish the feat, as a huge inspiration. Speaking at the UFC 306 media day, the women's flyweight champion stated:

"Brandon Moreno. He was the first Mexican champion. When you see someone that achieved something, but you don't know them, they're not from your country, you've never been around them, but it's different when you have met the person, trained with him, he's from the same country as you, has stepped on the same line as you. It's different when you watch someone having success and you say, 'oh my god. He's from the same place that I come from. It's real'."

Grasso added that Moreno has been a huge inspiration to her and other Mexican fighters. She will have the opportunity to become the first Mexican-born fighter to defend a title this weekend.
