Chennaiyin FC have announced their decision to part ways with attacking midfielder Rafael Crivellaro. The Brazilian, who returned for a second stint with the club in the summer of 2023, played a pivotal role in helping the team secure a spot in the playoffs after a four-year absence.

Crivellaro, who only signed a one-year contract, made 22 appearances in the ISL 2023-24 season, scoring four goals and providing seven assists. His assist tally was, in fact, the second-highest in the league, just behind Punjab FC’s Madih Talal.

The 35-year-old has certainly been a cornerstone for Chennaiyin FC over the past few seasons. His first tenure with the club left a lasting impression on the fans, particularly under Owen Coyle, when his goals, assists, and signature Brazilian flair propelled Chennaiyin FC to the final against all odds back in 2020.

However, injuries affected his form after that initial season, with the club opting to release him in December 2022. Crivellaro then joined Jamshedpur FC in the winter transfer window, where he delivered consistent performances before Chennaiyin FC brought him back last year.

Overall, Crivellaro made 54 appearances for Chennaiyin FC across his two spells, scoring 14 goals and providing 16 assists. He will certainly be celebrated for his significant contributions in the ISL over the years.

Chennaiyin FC set to bolster their squad for the upcoming season

Owen Coyle has repeatedly emphasized that his approach at the club will focus on signing younger players and developing them, and the club has already begun taking steps in this direction. After extending Ryan Edwards’ contract, Chennaiyin FC has completed the signings of experienced Jamshedpur FC trio Elsinho Dias, Daniel Chima Chukwu and Laldinpuia.

However, the primary focus will be on the young talents they plan to bring in. Marina Machans have reportedly added Mohun Bagan SG duo Kiyan Nassiri and Lalrinliana Hnamte, along with Mumbai City FC forward Gurkirat Singh.

Lukas Brambilla, who recently played for a top-tier club in Cyprus, is being considered as a replacement for Rafael Crivellaro, while Connor Shields, who had an impressive first season with Chennaiyin FC, is expected to extend his contract.

These new signings will significantly lower the average age of Chennaiyin FC’s squad, as the club aims to revamp the team to compete with the top teams in the league.
