Amid the razzmatazz of the ongoing 2016 IPL, Hockey India showed great heart and have decided to donate Rs. 10 lakh to Chief Minister, Shri Devendra Fadanavis for drought relief in Maharashtra.
At a time when Maharashtra is reeling under the worst drought of the century, they have taken it as a moral responsibility and extended a helping hand.
Over the past few months, the condition in the state of Maharashtra has been severe, with the drought leading to farmer suicides and loss in agricultural production.
Expressing grief over the current situation in Maharashtra, this is what Hockey India Secretary General Mohd. Mushtaque Ahmad and CEO Elena Norman had to say:
“This is a heart-wrenching tragedy that has fell upon Maharashtra, we just want to fulfil our responsibility to bring relief to the farmers of the state in every way possible. This is the time when everyone should step up and extend full support to our fellow citizens in this calamity. There has been a considerable loss to the farmers community, our contribution is a small gesture of support to help them recover.”
Brilliant gesture from Hockey India
While Maharashtra continues to paint a dismal picture on the agrarian front, the Bombay High Court ordered to shift all the IPL matches from the state from April 30 onwards.
The order will not only affect 13 matches but also the final that was to be held at the Wankhede Stadium on May 29.
This is indeed a magnificent gesture on the part of Hockey India. They proved once again that sportspersons can be heroes in real life too.
They have certainly won hearts of millions of Indians. Hope this helps Maharashtra in the best possible way.
