Hockey- a study in neglect!

sumal

To state that hockey in India is dying a slow death is stating the obvious! We see that every day in the national press- witness the recent hype over Sachin Tendulkar‘s 20 years in international cricket. The media went overboard with Sachin’s exploits over the years. Contrast that with Dilip Tirkey’s 400th international hockey match which hardly recieved a mention . Can we blame kids for not playing Hockey anymore given the amount of prominence we give to Hockey players!

Sachin’s wife, Anjali gets more media attention that the Indian Hockey Captain. A pop quiz among sports fans will prove my assertion. The Indian Women’s hockey team which recently emerged runners up in the Asia Cup recieved a princely sum of $ 35 per day as match allowance. How much cricketers are paid for their failures is a fact well known to the public at large

I do not see a light at the end of the tunnel. Hockey will be dead in India within a few years , sadly killed by the country’s passion for cricket
