Despite big losses, Indian Eves eye best finish in Hockey World Cup since 1974

Here is how the Indian team has fared so far at the ongoing BDO FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup.

The lowest ranked team in the tournament at 13, the Indian eves started out playing a very attacking game against the Netherlands (they were at 1-1 after 22 minutes with over 50% of the possession) before getting a 7-1 beat down from the world number 1.

They followed the game up with attacking performances against both Australia and Germany, each time being let down by defensive lapses, resulting in 6 -3 and 4 – 1 losses respectively. The scores also reflect the struggle the team has had in penalty corner conversions. All of the team’s goals in the first three games were scored from open play, and they wasted their first 8 penalty corners.

The girls did turn their tournament around by beating Japan 2 – 0 on Sunday (including their only penalty corner conversion to date) and if they hold New Zealand to a draw today they will ensure themselves a spot in the play offs for positions 4 through 8 (with South Korea, China and either Australia or Germany being the other 3 teams playing for those positions), which will mark their best performance since a 4th place finish in 1974.

Well done ladies, and wish you all the best for the rest of the tournament.
