Are the Boston Bruins Primed for a Stanley Cup Run?

Boston Bruins v New York Islanders

The Boston Bruins have won their last 11 out of 15 games including yesterday's 5-1 win on the road against the New York Islanders. The Bruins are currently in second place in the Atlantic Division. Their record is 22-10-6 with 50 points. Boston has scored 119 goals so far this season and they have given up 95.

Boston likes to play fast and uptempo and that's what head coach Bruce Cassidy wants to see. Cassidy was the interim coach last season after Claude Julien was fired during the middle of the season. Cassidy led them to the playoffs and they lost in six games to the Ottawa Senators.

Now, Cassidy has a vision for the Bruins to win it all this season. However even though they don't play in a strong division, Boston would have to worry about the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Tampa Bay Lightning (best team in the NHL).

Boston has been very good this year this season because of their goaltending. Anton Khudobin has played in 14 games for the Bruins so far this season. His record is 8-2-3 with a .923 save percentage and a 2.47 GAA, along with one shutout. Tuukka Rask has played in 26 games so far this season. His record is 14-8-3 with a .925 save percentage and a 2.09 GAA, along with two shutouts. Khudobin has played in more games because Rask was hurt earlier in the season. If it wasn't for him, the Bruins wouldn't be in this position right now.

David Pastrnak leads the Bruins with 35 points (15 goals 20 assists). Brad Marchand has scored 16 goals and recorded 18 assists so far this season. Rookie Danton Heinen has scored 10 goals and recorded 18 assists so far this season. He was a first-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.

Patrice Bergeron has scored 12 goals and recorded 14 assists so far this season. Torey Krug leads the Bruins defense with 22 points (6 goals and 16 assists). Rookie Charlie McAvoy has scored five goals and recorded 16 assists. He is a solid two-way defenseman. Rookie Jake DeBrusk has scored eight goals and recorded 11 assists so far this season. He was a first-round pick in the 2015 NHL Draft.

The Bruins have very good depth and they have different guys contributing every night. If Boston keeps this up they won't be an easy out in the postseason, but I don't think they have enough firepower to take down the Tampa Bay Lightning in a playoff series. Boston is heading in the right direction with younger players and they will be a legit championship contender in a season or two.
