In 2004, after thirteen years on the PGA Tour, Mickelson secured his first-ever major victory. That came at the Masters, where he used an 18-foot putt to birdie the final hole. A Monday final round at the 2005 PGA Championship at Baltusrol saw Mickelson win his second major because of bad weather the day before. Finishing at 4-under-par 276 one shot ahead of Steve Elkington and Thomas Bjørn, Mickelson made his birdie on the 18th hole after hitting one of his signature soft pitches from greenside rough to within 18 inches of the cup.

At the PGA Championship in May 2021, Mickelson was ahead of Brooks Koepka by one stroke with one day remaining; he defeated Koepka and Louis Oosthuizen by two strokes in the final round, shooting 73 to win the tournament and became the oldest major champion, then-aged 50.

Following this triumph, Mickelson expressed his optimism before competing in the major the following week, saying he had "never felt more excited" for the Open.

Mickelson won his fifth major championship the following week; it was the first in history for someone to win both the Open Championship and the Scottish Open in the same year. After finishing his round with tears on the 18th green, Mickelson shot a final round of 66 in which he birdied four of the final six holes to win the title by three strokes.
