Two-time Illinois open champion Rick Ten Broeck dies at 76

Richard "Rick" Ten Broeck died on October 10, 2024, at the age of 76. The two-time Illinois Open champion is the brother of the late PGA Tour star Lance Ten Broeck, who died in 2023 from organ failure.

The brothers were regulars at the Beverly Country Club in Chicago, Illinois. Rick suffered from Parkinson's disease and Dementia. His obituary in the Chicago Tribune read:

"One of 8 children to the late Eleanor and Willis Ten Broeck. Loving Father of Scott, Erik (Amy), and Kyle (Kara). Proud Grandpa to Nora, Lucas, Sawyer, and Aiden. Fond Brother of the late Bill, Jane (Tom) Wilner, Jim, Ellen (Steve) Culliton, Betty (the late Howard), Margie (Steve) Truter, and the late Lance."

The news of his passing was shared on X (formerly Twitter):

"Sad news: Rick Ten Broeck, two-time Illinois Open champion and three-time state player of the year, died Thursday at 76. A Beverly Country Club legend (18-time club champion) and friend to all. Brother Lance died a year ago in April. R.I.P."

Broeck graduated from Brother Rice High School and the University of Arizona. He won the Beverly Country Club championship a whopping 18 times.

The late icon has more than 15 USGA titles to his name along with three consecutive Illinois State Player of the Year titles. In his obituary published by the Chicago Tribune, his family stated that flowers can be sent to the Beverly Country Club at 2430 W. 87th Street, Chicago, Illinois, 60652.


Rick Ten Broeck's performance at the 64th Illinois Open

Rick Ten Broeck played two rounds of the 64th Illinois Open before missing the cut by four strokes. Hosted in July of 2013, the amateur had an opening round score of nine over par 81 comprised of five bogeys and two double bogeys.

He followed it up with a great second round score of seven over par 79. Broeck started the day strong with pars on the first and second holes. Despite being faced with a bogey on the third hole, he remained resilient and went on to card in five pars in the next six holes.

The back nine saw the late USGA champion fire up four consecutive back-to-back pars before being interrupted by a bogey on the par five 14th hole at The Glen Club in Glenview, Illinois. Rick Broeck was four over through 17 holes. However, the par five 18th hole saw him card in an unfortunate triple bogey 8 that cost him to miss the cut.
