Tommy Fleetwood narrowly missed out on a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. The Great Britain player, who was in contention from Round 2 onwards, finished Sunday’s fourth round on five under. He settled for silver in Paris as Team USA’s Scottie Scheffler took gold.

Fleetwood seemed defeated after losing the big prize for Team GB at Le Golf National. However, the Englishman soon proved that his spirit was in the right place. Following the loss, the 33-year-old golfer left a heartwarming note on social media for his fans. The Stockport-born star revealed that he “couldn’t be prouder to contribute to Team Great Britain’s medal count.”

The British star, who was a fan favorite in Paris, stated that the Olympics dream has been new to him and he is ecstatic to share the podium with PGA Tour rivals Scheffler and Hideki Matsuyama.

Tommy Fleetwood wrote on X:

“I honestly never had this as a dream as a kid but it definitely became one in recent years. Golf is a beautiful sport. The passion, the emotion and the energy felt out there today was magical thank you!! I couldn’t be prouder to contribute to Team Great Britain’s medal count and represent the nation this week.
"Being on that podium with Scottie and Hideki will be a memory etched in my heart forever.”

Interestingly, Fleetwood was one of the few golfers who achieved what he set out for in Paris. Ahead of the Olympics golf competition, the Englishman had revealed that his goal this weekend was to win ‘a medal for Team GB.’

He mentioned it while many others like Rory McIlroy said ‘gold.’ The golfer, who is yet to win on the PGA Tour, seemed happy with the result.

Tommy Fleetwood lauds Paris Olympics experience

Tommy Fleetwood dubbed the Paris Olympics leaderboard ‘unbelievable.’ Speaking in the post-event medalists’ press conference, the Englishman stated that the event was “very enjoyable” despite his loss. The silver medalist said he “enjoyed competing against the best players in the world.”

The golfer, who lauded the atmosphere at Le Golf National multiple times through the weekend, reiterated that the event was ‘different’ to what he gets on the PGA Tour.

Tommy Fleetwood said while being seated alongside Scheffler and Matsuyama, as quoted by ASAP Sports:

“Just a different vibe. It was very, very enjoyable, it really, really was. I think the leaderboard was unbelievable… I thought it was great and I enjoyed competing against the best players in the world for something that is so sought after and so cherished. This isn't going to happen again now for four years. You're always aware of that.”

Fleetwood went on to reveal that he was ‘pretty nervous’ towards the end of his round. He dubbed it a “different feeling” to win the silver medal by making a 6-footer in the final.
