Tennis legend Andy Murray recently participated in the 2024 BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am event. The event was held before the main tournament on September 18 at Wentworth Golf Club in Virginia Water, United Kingdom.
Murray was paired with professional golfer Robert MacIntyre and celebrities Jimmy Anderson, and Anton Du Beke for the event. Tommy Fleetwood alongside Tom Holland and his twin brothers Harry and Sam, won the event with a score of 31.
In the post-round press conference, Andy Murray was asked about his experience at the event and if he is considering playing at the Dunhill in a couple of weeks. The Alfred Dunhill Links Championship is a prestigious pro-am golf tournament held annually in Scotland. This year it will be held from October 3 to 6.
Murray said (via ASAP Sports):
"I'm happy playing in front of nobody to be honest. But yeah, look, I really enjoy like playing. I've obviously got a lot of free time just now, so playing a few times a week. Yeah, having lessons and just enjoying having something to focus my attention on. Yeah, like I said, lots of free time to do it," he said.
When asked if becoming a scratch golfer was his real aim and how long would it take, Murray replied:
"A couple years probably. I think so. I mean, I'm obviously getting to practise a lot more than the average person. I obviously played a bit when I was younger, and if I can get the right sort of lessons and practise the right things, then yeah, I've got a chance of doing that I think in a couple years," Murray commented.
He further added that the lessons have made a huge difference to his game and learning the correct techniques has proven beneficial, however, a flaw in his swing has acted as a barrier so far.
Robert MacIntyre says that it won't be long before Andy Murray becomes a scratch golfer
Andy Murray played the BMW PGA Championship Pro-Am event with golfer Robert MacIntyre. After the event, MacIntyre took to his official X handle and claimed that it wouldn't be long before Andy Murray became a scratch golfer.
MacIntyre wrote:
"Got @andy_murray on my diet (icecream emoji) Unreal to spend time with Andy today, one of my sporting heroes. Won’t be long till he’s off scratch (Scotland's flag)"
Robert MacIntyre has time and again praised the tennis legend. At the time of Andy Murray's retirement from tennis, MacIntyre had called him an inspiration and said it was unfortunate that his career was affected by injuries.
In the press conference after the event, MacIntyre was asked how much of an idol Andy Murray is for their generation. He said (via ASAP Sports):
"Look, I think any Scottish person growing up, watching sport, there's not many people that you can look to in sports that are proper champions that go about things the right way. Yeah, on the courts, he gets heated. On the course, I get heated. But the fight he's got and the dedication to the sport, it's unbelievable. He's just a sporting idol for many people," MacIntyre said.
Andy Murray, who retired from Tennis last month, currently has a handicap of 7.
