Recently, English golfer Matt Fitzpatrick threw a quip at the PGA Tour's way after the tour officials allowed Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy to repair his broken club. Both players are currently competing at the BMW PGA Championship at the Wentworth Club in England, where the incident happened.

McIlroy encountered an unexpected situation at the 12th hole when his club head broke off from his shaft during an aggressive shot. Despite the head completely off from the shot, the world no. 3 pulled off an accurate aim. However, he managed to repair the club head and have it working by the 16th hole.

This incident led to Matt Fitzpatrick throwing a dig at the PGA Tour officials for allowing Rory McIlroy to repair the club. As he took to his X account and tweeted:

Not sure that’s significant enough damage to be replaced….

His comment received a lot of support on social media.

"Shots fired"
"Sick burn", a fan commented.
"Good response!" another said.
"Well played."
"Hey Fitz, that joke made me crack a smile on my face." a fan added.

Certainly, a lot of fans found Fitzpatrick's comment amusing. However, the British golfer's comment comes after he was not allowed to replace his cracked driver citing "insufficient damage" at the BMW Championship in August this year. He finally found his chance to needle the officials over the decision after McIlroy's unfortunate club head detachment.

Back in August, Matt Fitzpatrick found himself in a rather frustrating situation when he encountered a crack on the face of his driver at the 2024 BMW Championship. Despite his pleas, he wasn't allowed to change it due to "insufficient damage".

According to rules, a golfer is not allowed to change their clubs because of a crack. Due to this, Fitzpatrick was left fuming at the officials at the par-5 8th hole. He was heard saying:

"This is outrageous, it's an absolute disgrace. I've literally just watched a ball do a completely different thing from the whole morning. It couldn't be more obvious,"

He further added:

"It's caved in. There's an obvious crack there that's causing a defect of ball flight,"

When the situation didn't reach a conclusion, Matt Fitzpatrick's playing partner for the day, Scottie Scheffler, also stepped in between. He took up his partner's cause and supported his case in front of the tour officials, but to no avail.

Later, a frustrated Fitzpatrick said:

"It's an absolute joke. I will make sure something is done after the round because it's a joke. It's the most obvious crack I've ever seen,"

The 30-year-old was forced to play with his 3-wood for the rest of the day. He eventually ended up placing T28. At the ongoing BMW PGA Championship, he is ranked T75 after the first round. Rory McIlroy is placed in T4.
