Rory McIlroy finished in a tie for ninth with Hideki Matsuyama and Shane Lowry at the 2024 PGA Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. This was Mcllroy's 22nd start in the year. He has played in 19 tournaments on the PGA Tour, two on the DP World Tour, and in the Olympic men's golf competition.

In the post-tournament press conference, McIlroy was asked how many starts he would have in 2024. He said,

"27."

The World No. 3 was then asked how many starts are too many in a golf calendar year, and he said (via ASAP Sports):

"27. I'm usually sort of like a 22 sort of person. But again, that was when I was sort of in my 20s and didn't have the responsibilities that I do now."

For context, Scottie Scheffler had 23 starts in 2023. This year, he will likely play in two more tournaments taking his total to 22 starts for the year. Mcllroy himself played in only 23 tournaments last year including 18 on PGA Tour.

McIlroy has won two events this year. He won the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship by five shots over Xander Schauffele. He also emerged victorious at the 2024 Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Shane Lowry. He further said:

"Yeah. My season is not over, obviously. I've still got five events left to play. But yeah, it's been -- I feel like the tournaments came thick and fast, and obviously with the Olympics thrown in there, as well, this year, it sort of condensed everything a bit."

He further said:

"It's been a long season, and I'm going to just have to think about trying to build in a few extra breaks here and there next year and going forward because I felt like I hit a bit of a wall sort of post-U.S. Open, and still feel a little bit of that hangover."

McIlroy failed to win a Major this year as well. His last Major victory was at the 2014 PGA Championship, by one stroke over Phil Mickelson. However, he came close to winning the 2024 US Open where he missed two easy putts in the last three holes.

The 35-year-old is set to participate in five more tournaments this year. He will next tee off at the 2024 Amgen Irish Open and then participate in the BMW PGA Championship next week.
