The PGA Tour x LIV Golf match, which is not technically a bout between two tours but just between Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Brooks Koepka, and Bryson DeChambeau, will reportedly pay each of the four players $4 million for their services this December.

It is being put on outside of either tour, so it's just a matchup of four golfers and the split happens to be by the tour they play on. Nevertheless, it's a good financial option, as it will pay more money than a Signature Event would and similar money to LIV events.

This fact has fans reacting negatively. What was once an interesting matchup between four of the most notable golfers in the sport is now less enticing to some fans now that there's a lot of money involved.

"So Rory has changed his stance on guaranteed money since the PGA-LIV merger?" one laughed.
"Instead of the players getting the money, let’s make it a true exhibition and give the $16 million directly to local charities for hurricane relief victims," another said.
"Sheesh that’s a lot of money. Just to show up," another chimed in.
"Hope no one watches this s**t. They're just not listening or intentionally missing the point around what fans are tired of," one complained.
"I seriously hope nobody watches this. Send a message to the professionals that competition >>> money for the fan experience," another added.
"It's like boxing," one noted.

Fans were quick to point out that money being heavily involved is one thing the modern sport suffers from, and adding it to this event isn't going to alleviate that issue.

Rory McIlroy champions PGA Tour x LIV Golf matchup

LIV Golf and the PGA Tour will face off in December, sort of. While the two tours largely have nothing to do with this event, it is two stars from each tour facing each other. It's as much a matchup of the two sides of the sport as it is one between four stars.

Rory McIlroy, one of the stars who has been staunchly anti-LIV in the past, has praised this event. He doesn't believe it's to send a message to fans, but to show them something they can once again be excited for.

Via Sports Illustrated, he praised his three counterparts:

“You've got the best player in the world. You've got two guys in Bryson and Brooks that have won majors in the last two years."

McIlroy did admit that he hasn't had as much success as they have lately, but that he is still a player who has been among the best in the world at times recently. The PGA Tour star went on to say that this is golf's way of showing fans what could happen in the future.

McIlroy believes fans want to see more than four matchups a year involving both PGA and LIV Golf players. The added bonus is that it adds an exciting event in the otherwise dead period for golf: December.
