Joel Dahmen decided to withdraw from the 2024 Shriners Children's Open before the start of the second round. The 36-year-old finished the first 18 holes with a score of 5-over 76.

The news was released by the PGA Tour Communications X account with the following text:

"Joel Dahmen WD before round two at Shriners Children’s Open"

The player has not given an explanation as to why he decided to withdraw. However, his first round score left him seven shots behind the cut-line, which is currently projected at 2-under.

Joel Dahmen was penalized four strokes during the first round of the Shriners Children's Open for carrying one extra club in his bag (a 4-iron). The infraction was discovered by Dahmen himself, who called the penalty on himself.

Because of the penalty, two strokes were added to his score on hole one and the same amount was added to his score on hole two. The official score for both holes was 6 (double bogey).

The second round of the Shriners Children's Open has been postponed several times due to inclement weather, which may cause the remaining rounds to be postponed as well. A Monday finish is not out of the question.

At the same time, the next PGA Tour event is the ZOZO Championship in Japan, where the players will have to travel almost right after finishing the Shriners Children's Open. All of these details may have influenced Dahmen's decision.

Joel Dahmen's PGA Tour membership: Current situation

Joel Dahmen is currently ranked 124th on the FedEx Cup Fall Leaderboard. With no points this week, he will most likely drop out of the top 125.

With four tournaments remaining in the FedEx Cup Fall, Dahmen will need strong finishes to return to the top 125. This group will receive full membership on the PGA Tour for the 2025 season, something Dahmen is not currently guaranteed.

If he fails to stay in the Top 125, but remains in the Top 150, Dahmen would still have the opportunity to play on the PGA Tour, but with a special temporary membership. This status would severely limit his possibility to play in PGA Tour tournaments.

This, in turn, would complicate his chances of qualifying for main events such as signature events and major championships. This is why it is so important for him to earn a spot in the Top 125.

This situation is due to his poor results this season. Dahmen has played 25 tournaments this year (not counting the Shriners Children's Open), making only 16 cuts and finishing in the top 10 just once.

Dahmen has played seven seasons on the PGA Tour. During that time, he has played in 205 tournaments and made 137 cuts. His best results include one victory and 22 other top-10s.
