Tiger Woods has played for the United States in the Presidents Cup nine times. In the 2019 Presidents Cup, he had an additional responsibility as the playing captain of the US team. In a 2019 interview with ESPN, the legendary golfer shared the 'hard' part of the Presidents Cup captaincy role after the tournament.

In the interview, Scott Van Pelt asked what was appealing to him about having to make hard phone calls to players not on the squad and deciding who plays with whom. Tiger Woods said:

"I think just the whole process getting know the guys, trying to put together a 12 man squad, three great vice captain's and trying to figure out who would the next four going to be after the eight autos," Woods said.
"So that was that's always the toughest process to try and round out the team and try and get that get the opinions from all the guys and I told him was open communication with all of us. I want to know who you want on the team and I want to know what the order is," he added (0:22-0:51)

Tiger Woods shared that he encouraged players to call or text him anytime whether it's day or night. He said that the players were fantastic in sharing their opinions and concerns and they worked through it as a team.

Pelt then further asked how difficult it was for Woods to make the phone call to players who couldn't be on the team. Talking about it, Woods' said:

"Unfortunately I've been a part of that and been a part of the process of where the captain has moved on from you and it sucks, that's just the way it is. But all I know is that all the guys that were in consideration all of us look and which Team USA all the best going down there obviously they're gonna be disappointed they're not part of it but there's only 12 and that's this way goes," he said (1:27-1:53).
