“36 straight matches i won…that’s not easy”: Tiger Woods recaps what it took to qualify for the US Amateur championship

Tiger Woods has a tremendous record in the USGA Championships. Woods won the US Junior Amateur three times, in 1991, 1992 and 1993. He remains the only player to win the US Junior Amateur title thrice.

In 1994, Woods became the youngest player to win the US Amateur Championship. The record was broken by Danny Lee in 2008. He won two more US Amateur titles in 1995 and 1996.

Talking about his USGA titles, Tiger Woods recently said (via USGA):

"Well, if you look at the numbers and you don't look at the fact that I lost in the amateurs that I ended up winning the U.S. junior in that year, okay, so to qualify for the amateur, I had to either do the 36-0 qualifier or I had to win the junior.

Woods further said:

"Well, I qualified for the amateur by winning the juniors and if you look at it through this, just only that lens alone, that's 36 straight matches I won. That is something I'm very proud of. It's not easy to do, trust me. It's a lot of holes and a lot of things can go awry in match play. You could run into a buzzsaw and anything can happen."

Tiger Woods further said that match play is an 18-hole sprint and you've to be determined and fight each and every hole as anything can happen. He further differentiated between Major Championships and match play in amateur events. He said that while Majors are like marathons, match play is a series of six different sprints to win the final.
