Controversial golf fashion icon looking to stay away from Tiger Woods’ 2000s style

In the 2000s, Tiger Woods was one of the most influential golfers on the planet. While Woods won many events and Major championships during these years, he also made a statement with his fashion. However, a golf star recently mentioned he stayed away from Woods' style in those years.

The golf star in question is Jason Day, who had a popular but controversial moment earlier this year after officials at the Masters asked him to remove his Malbon-sponsored sweater.

During his appearance on The Smylie Show, Day said he was looking to stay away from Tiger Woods' early-2000s style even as he was attempting to switch up his own styles.

Day said:

"It's been interesting to say the least is year, it's just doesn't take much to shake the tree a little bit in the golfing World, especially with what you wear, which is amazing. And I think obviously like you said I used to wear a lot of tight stuff back in the day, whether it used to be with Adidas or Nike I was wearing like very athletic-performance type of clothing, and now the clothing is just a little bit baggy. And then I was actually talking to the guys...I'm trying to get my shirt baggier next year. It's kind of not to the point of 'Tiger 2000' but very close to it" [1:01].

He added,

"Over the years I got more tired of, like, wearing the same thing over and over again. So I wanted to be a little bit different. Every now and then you wear something on the tee box and you walk onto the first tee and then you look across the tee box and someone's wearing the same thing as you"[2:15].

Further on in his appearance, Jason Day said it felt nice to go out and wear something different from most guys. Day has been known to make quite the statement with his fashion.

At the Wells Fargo Championship this year, he was spotted in a baggy, crème-colored pants and a button-down, short-sleeved shirt. His look at the tournament drew the attention of Golf Channel's Todd Lewis and fans on social media.

Tiger Woods' Sun Day Red launches first store

In early 2024, Tiger Woods ended his 27-year partnership with Nike, which shocked many. Following this, he unveiled his new apparel line, Sun Day Red, at the Genesis Invitational. On May 1st, the brand launched its collection, which drew criticism from fans due to the high prices.

Since then, Woods has taken another step forward with Sun Day Red, with the brand announcing its first store this week. On Instagram, the official handle of Sun Day Red collaborated with Tiger Woods' handle to announce the opening of the apparel line's new store at Pebble Beach.

The caption of the post read:

"For the first time, Sun Day Red is available to shop in person - exclusively at Pebble Beach. Tiger’s connection with Pebble Beach is significant, not only to him, but golf as a whole – and there’s no other place Sun Day Red would choose to have its first retail experience. Open daily from 9 AM – 6:30 PM, located at 1700 17 Mile Drive, Pebble Beach, CA."

Sun Day Red opening its first store comes after a company named Tigeraire accused Tiger Wood's apparel line of unlawfully hijacking their logo. Tigeraire filed a notice of opposition with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In response, Woods' brand countersued Tigeraire.
