On Sunday, September 15, Bubba Watson became one of five names to fall into the LIV Golf Drop Zone after finishing 53rd in the season-long standings with 3.66 points. He finished 42nd in Chicago, which wasn't enough to push him out of the danger zone.

Watson has become the first captain to be relegated in LIV Golf's history. For the uninitiated, there was previously a rule that kept captains safe from demotion. Martin Kaymer and Lee Westwood were beneficiaries of the rule last season. However, last week, LIV announced a rule change, meaning Watson would join Kalle Samooja, Branden Grace, Scott, and Kieran Vincent on the relegated list.

However, it's not all over for the two-time Masters champion, as he can continue in the Saudi-backed circuit if his team considers him suitable for "business reasons."

Following the penultimate event of the LIV season, Bubba Watson said it had been a tough year, but his teammates wanted him back, and he would like to return to RangeGoats GC.

"I know some discussions need to take place and there's some business considerations," he said as per Sports Illustrated. "We have one of the most popular teams. Am I part of that? I think I am and I'm committed to playing better."

Randal Wells, the general manager of RangeGoats GC, said that Watson was disappointed with his performance and indicated the golfer's return next season.

"He’s had a bad run of 11 tournaments or so and we consider this a slump and not a downturn," he told Sporst Illustrated. "We’ve already had realistic discussions about this and his teammates have confidence that he will return to form. Our goal is to be a competitive team."

Bubba Watson made just two top-25 finishes this season, with his T15 finish at LIV Golf Las Vegas being his best result of the year. Besides, he missed the cut at the Masters Tournament, the only major he competed in during 2024.
