Fans on social media reacted to Sam Burns smashing his driver on the ground after a bad shot at the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship. During the third round of the tournament on August 17, Burns had a tough outing on the ninth hole. A poor shot led to a double bogey, causing him to slip down one position and finish in a tie for fourth place, seven strokes behind the leader, Hideki Matsuyama.

Sam Burns struggled on the front nine, and his bad shot on the ninth hole left him four strokes behind at that point. As the round progressed, his struggles continued, ultimately finishing seven strokes behind the leader.

The PGA Tour shared a video of Burns slamming his driver after the bad shot on its X (formerly Twitter) account, writing:

"After an errant tee shot on No. 9, Sam Burns breaks his driver and will be without it for the back nine. With the double bogey, he is now 4 shots back (solo 3rd)."

Fans in the comments section criticized Burns, urging him to control his anger.

"Some anger management couldn't hurt," a fan wrote.

Meanwhile, one fan remarked that the club seemed weak, while another commented that as a professional, Burns should not be making any excuses.

"That's all it took too break? Weak club," another fan wrote.
"No excuse for a professional to do this," a fan jotted.

Another fan commented on Burns' swing.

"That swing was so bad the driver should have snapped him," another fan wrote.

Burns began his 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship campaign on Thursday, August 15, with a birdie on the first hole. He recorded four birdies on the front nine and added two birdies and three bogeys on the back nine, finishing the first round with a 3-under 67.

In the second round, Burns started with a par on the first hole before making an eagle on the next. He carded six birdies, an eagle and a bogey to shoot a 7-under 63.

During the third round, Burns shot an even-par 70 with seven birdies, five bogeys, and a double bogey, ending the day tied for fourth place with Scottie Scheffler. Meanwhile, Hideki Matsuyama extended his lead after shooting a 64, taking a five-stroke advantage with a score of 17-under par.

Nick Dunlap secured solo second place, while Viktor Hovland finished in solo third. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, August 18.
