LIV Golf announces shock news, captains including Bubba Watson face relegation threat at the end of 2024

With only one tournament left before the Team Championship, Bubba Watson stands in the red zone on the leaderboard. While his team- Range Goats GC- is in ninth place among 13 teams, the former PGA Tour star needs to step it up at the LIV Golf Invitational in Chicago this week to avoid consequences.

Ranked 52nd on the individual leaderboard with a mere 3.66 points, Watson sits in the dreaded drop zone. Nine players sit in the red drop zone while 23 players are in the yellow open zone. According to LIV Golf's rules, players ranked 49th or below will be relegated out of the league for next year.

Past rules stated that captains would be exempted from the harsh drop. However, the Saudi-funded league has announced that the captains are subject to relegation and are not exempt. The two-time Masters champion believes he is past his prime and is willing to step away if his teammates desire. In August last year, Watson said (via Irish Star):

"I told my team if they don't think I am good enough to play, they can kick me out and we will put another good golfer in my place. I am going to play until they kick me out."

If dropped, Bubba Watson and other players will earn a chance to gain a spot back in the Saudi-based league via tournaments later this year. This week, players will get a chance to gain points and move into the open zone at the 2024 LIV Golf Invitational in Chicago at the Bolingbrook Country Club.
