Each year, 14 ping pong balls numbered from 1-14 are placed into a machine and four numbers are drawn at random, creating a four-digit combination.
Each team is assigned certain combinations based on their regular season record and whether they made any trades throughout the season for additional combinations.
For example, if there are three non-playoff teams with equal records and no trades made during that season, each would get five different four-number combinations out of 1,001 possible ones.
