Atalanta lock horns with Venezia in Serie A

Venezia will invite Atalanta to Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo in Serie A on Sunday. The hosts have just one win in seven league games and are at the bottom of the league standings. La Dea have fared much better with three wins and are in eighth place with 10 points.

I Lagunari played Verona away from home before the international break and suffered a 2-1 loss. Gaetano Oristanio broke the deadlock in the second minute and Verona equalized seven minutes later. Jesse Joronen was at fault for an own goal in the 81st minute, which condemned them to their fifth loss of the campaign.

The visitors have seen an upturn in form and are unbeaten in their last three games across all competitions, recording two wins on the trot. They hosted Genoa in their previous outing and registered a comfortable 5-1 win. Mateo Retegui bagged a hat-trick and had an assist to this name.

Venezia vs Atalanta Head-to-Head and Key Numbers

  • The two teams have squared off 50 times in all competitions. The visitors have the upper hand in these meetings with 23 wins. I Lagunari have 13 wins and 14 games have ended in draws.
  • They last met in the 2021-22 season and La Dea had a 100% record in three meetings. They secured a league double with a 7-1 win on aggregate and won the Coppa Italia meeting 2-0.
  • Six of the last eight meetings between the two teams have produced under 2.5 goals with five clean sheets for the visitors and three for Venezia.
  • Atalanta are on a six-game unbeaten streak in Serie A against I Lagunari, recording five wins and keeping four clean sheets.
  • The visitors have the joint-best goalscoring record in Serie A, scoring 16 goals in seven games. Interestingly, they have conceded 13 goals in these games, one more than the hosts.

Venezia vs Atalanta Prediction

I Lagunari have won just one of their eight games across all competitions this season while suffering six defeats. They had failed to score in three of their first four league games and have managed to score at least once in their last three outings.

Bjarki Bjarkason remains the only absentee for the hosts due to an injury. Eusebio Di Francesco is likely to field a similar starting team from their 2-1 loss to Verona.

La Dea have been in good touch recently, winning two of their last three games while scoring nine goals. Nonetheless, they are winless in their last three away games in Serie A, suffering two losses, which is a cause for concern.

Giorgio Scalvini, Gianluca Scamacca, Marco Brescianini, and Odilon Kossounou remain sidelined with injuries for the hosts. Berat Djimsiti, Rafael Tolói, and Matteo Ruggeri trained separately and are doubts for the trip to Venice.

They play in the UEFA Champions League against Celtic on Wednesday, so Gian Piero Gasperini might opt to start key players like Ademola Lookman from the bench.

The hosts have suffered two consecutive 2-1 losses and have lost three games on the spin against the visitors, scoring just once. With that in mind and considering the goalscoring form of the two teams, La Dea are expected to record a comfortable win.

Prediction: Venezia 1-3 Atalanta
