Napoli and Lazio are reportedly in the fray to sign Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood. The 22-year-old is out of contract next summer but seems to have played his last for the club.

Greenwood was regarded as one of the best players to have come up through the ranks at Old Trafford when he first emerged on the scene. However, allegations of rape, assault and coercive behaviour saw the player arrested in January 2022.

A year later, all the allegations were dismissed, but the damage was already done, and United's attempts to reinstate Greenwood to the first team met with massive fan backlash. Eventually, the striker was loaned out to Getafe for the season last summer, where he enjoyed a decent spell, before returning to his parent club.

Marseille have reportedly struck an agreement worth €31.6 million and a percentage of future sales (as per Gianluca Di Marzio). The Ligue 1 club are said to be in the driving seat in the race for Greenwood, who has seemingly taken his time to make up his mind.

That has allowed Napoli and Lazio to enter the fray. Napoli have monitored Greenwood's situation for a while, as they seek attacking reinforcements. But Marseille appear to be the most likely destination for the Manchester United striker, with Lazio's interest seemingly cooling off.

Mason Greenwood returned to competitive action after more than a year and provided a decent account of himself. In 36 games across competitions, the 23-year-old contributed 10 goals and six assists.

Most of those goal contributions - eight goals and six assists in 33 games - came in La Liga, where Getafe finished well outside the European places, in 12th, 10 points clear of the relegation zone.

Greenwood also scored twice in three games in the Copa del Rey, where the Madrid-based side lost 3-1 at home to Sevilla in the Round of 16 after beating Tardienta, Atzeneta and Espanyol in the first three rounds.
