Former Manchester United defender Raphael Varane has been linked with a move to the USA to play with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami. However, newly promoted Serie A side Como 1907 are reportedly working on a deal to convince the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner to come to Italy instead.

Varane has been one of the most popular players in the world, following his stellar spell at Real Madrid. He has now left Old Trafford on a free transfer, with reports circulating about his future club.

The 31-year-old has reportedly been courted by Cristiano Ronaldo's employers Al-Nassr, who would like to add his defensive expertise to their squad. Lionel Messi's club Inter Miami are also said to be interested in his services, and they were believed to be the favourites to sign him.

However, Cesc Fabregas-led Como 1907 have taken the race for Varane by storm. Fabrizio Romano (via Inter Miami News) has revealed that the newly promoted club have begun negotiations with Varane.

Both parties reportedly initiated contact earlier, with the club submitting a proposal to the defender's representatives. Now, according to the report, Varane is making preparations to meet up with Fabregas in Como.

Inter Miami's Jordi Alba discusses playing without Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez

Lionel Messi is leading Argentina at the ongoing 2024 Copa America. The Herons have had to make do without the legendary playmaker in recent games, as well as Luis Suarez, who is with Uruguay, also at the Cooa.

In their last three games, though, Miami have secured consecutive wins without the two former Barcelona players. Herons full-back Jordi Alba, who played alongside the duo at the Camp Nou, has discussed playing without them. Speaking to MLS Wrap Up, the left-back said (via Inter Miami News):

“We miss them a lot, for their international teams they’re doing really well and we hope they stay there for as long as possible, but for now, we’re doing well ourselves here, and we have to continue going with this form.”

Messi and Suarez have been vital players in Miami's MLS campaign this season. The Argentine legend has helped their cause with 21 goal contributions in 12 league games. Suarez has fared similarly, helping with 17 goal contributions in 16 league outings..
