Manchester United have reportedly inserted a clause in attacker Mason Greenwood's sale to Marseille that could see him return to Old Trafford. Having spent the last season on loan at Getafe, he's now off to Ligue 1 on a permanent move.

The 22-year-old was indefinitely suspended from the first team after he was arrested on allegations of rape, assault and coercive behaviour. Although the charges were lifted a year later, Greenwood's future at Old Trafford was sealed, and he was shipped off to Getafe on loan for the season.

Back at his parent club this summer, he had little hope of being reinstated to the United first team, as he has been sold to Marseille. However, the Telegraph (via GOAL) has reported that the Red Devils - who jettisoned Greenwood off to the Ligue 1 side in a £27 million deal - have a buyback clause. They also have 50% right to any future transfer fee Marseille may generate.

The forward has signed a five-year deal at the Stade Velodrome as he looks to kickstart his career afresh away from England. But the aforementioned buyback clause means he could yet have a future at Manchester United sometime in the future, chances of which remain quite unlikely at the moment.

Mason Greenwood returned to competitive action last season during his loan spell at Getefe from Manchester United. Away for more than a year, he fared rather decently in his first full season since the 2020-21 campaign.

In 36 games across competitions, Greenwood contributed 10 goals and six assists. Most of those goal contributions - eight goals and six assists in 33 games - came in La Liga, where Getafe finished 12th, well below the European places.

Greenwood's two other goals came in three outings in the Copa del Rey, where the La Liga side lost 3-1 at home to Sevilla in the fourth round. His both goals in the competition came in the 12-0 first-round win at CF Tardienta.
