Premier League side face point deduction

According to journalist Matt Hughes, Leicester City are set to be handed two separate point deductions for failing to abide by the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

Leicester secured promotion from the Championship this season after being relegated in 2022-23. They won the Championship in 2023-24. Leicester won the Premier League in a fairytale manner in 2015-16 but have recently struggled with their finances.

According to PSR, a club can have a maximum loss of £105 million over the course of three seasons. Breaching that standard would result in point deductions. However, as per The Guardian, Leicester's main issue has been their wage bill, which is the seventh-highest in the league.

That has resulted in a total loss of £92.5 million in 2021-22 and £89.7 million in 2022-23. The club's wages-to-turnover ratio is 116%. Two other clubs who faced points deduction, Everton and Nottingham Forest, had a much less ratio than that. The Toffees recorded 92% while Forest recorded 94%.

The charges against Leicester City were brought in March. While the club acknowledged that, they tried to argue that the PSR rules didn't apply when they were in the Championship.

As per football blogger Swiss Ramble, Leicester are set to be way over the £105 million threshold over three seasons despite permissible deductions. That'd see the club lose six points via deduction.

While the team could still secure survival in the Premier League, they need to turn in a profit of at least £12 million this season. Otherwise, the team will face further points deduction next season. Moreover, they won't be able to strengthen their squad.

When do Leicester City kick off their Premier League campaign?

Leicester City are set to kickstart their Premier League campaign on Monday, August 19. They host Tottenham Hotspur at the King Power Stadium on their return to the top-flight.

Leicester City are set to face a point deduction, meaning the club have little room for error as they look to secure survival in the Premier League. The club start a new chapter under coach Steve Cooper, who has taken charge following Enzo Maresca's departure to Chelsea.

Leicester also have crucial players missing at this point. Patson Daka has suffered an injury, with Jamie Vardy also being on the treatment table at the moment. Hence, the Foxes are in a difficult spot before the start of the 2024-25 campaign.
