Gareth Southgate bid adieu to managing the England team after their consecutive European Championship final defeat. After a stuttering run to the Euro 2024 final, they lost 2-1 to an inspired Spanish team boasting of youngsters like Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.

England FA wanted Gareth Southgate to continue his role as the manager and was even ready to offer him a new contract with lucrative terms. However, Gareth Southgate decided to quit his job without even finishing the length of his old contract which ran till December 31.

After Gareth Southgate's departure, FA have been considering several prominent names to be the next spearhead of the English side. A report by The Telegraph states that Ange Postecoglou is on the list as well. FA's technical director John McDermott had been following the Tottenham Hotspur manager for a long time and has been a fan of his work throughout the years.

Postecoglou was appointed as the manager of Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023 and has been fairly successful in his first season for the club. Under his leadership, Tottenham finished fifth in the Premier League table and qualified for the UEFA Europa League. The 58-year-old won the Manager of the Month award thrice in a row and recorded 20 wins in 38 games for the English club.

The prospect of coaching the England team has never been as lucrative as it is today. The side have consistently reached the business end of most tournaments they've participated in. In the last few years, England have reached two Euro finals, one World Cup semifinal, and a World Cup quarter-final.

According to the report by The Telegraph, Lee Carsley, Mauricio Pochettino, Eddie Howe, and Graham Potter are the most favorable candidates for the job. It also states that Eddie Howe's current club, Newcastle United, will fight tooth and nail to keep their manager and persuade him to not leave for the job. Finally, former Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel is also on the FA's radar.

However, they will have to settle for a lower pay package of between $4 million to $5 million. The FA will not be able to pay hefty paychecks that top-level managers get in big clubs.
