Martin Zubimendi makes decision regarding Liverpool move amid internal pressure from Real Sociedad - Reports

According to journalist Jorge C. Picon (via Revelo), Martin Zubimendi has decided against joining Liverpool this summer amid internal pressure from his club Real Sociedad. The Reds have long been after Zubimendi's signature, with the 25-year-old reportedly on the verge of making the switch to England.

Liverpool were ready to trigger Zubimendi's €60 million release clause and had reportedly agreed personal terms with the midfielder.

However, he has made a shocking U-turn and decided to stay at Real Sociedad after the La Liga side put on the charm offensive to convince him. La Real were desperate for Zubimendi to stay, as they would have struggled to find a replacement for the holding midfielder. They have reportedly offered the Spaniard higher wages as well.

Zubimendi played a vital role in Spain's triumph at Euro 2024. He was excellent in the second half of the final against England after replacing Manchester City's Rodri at half-time. He has also become a staple in Real Sociedad's midfield, playing over 30 league games in each of the last four seasons.

Liverpool may have to look elsewhere for reinforcements in midfield, with Martin Zubimendi now opting to remain in Spain. However, while things are not going to plan in the transfer market, they are getting better on the pitch.

Under new head coach Arne Slot, the Reds have had to adapt to a different style of play, following nine years of Jurgen Klopp as the boss. They enjoyed a fairly impressive pre-season, remaining unbeaten in their five friendly fixtures, including a 3-0 win over rivals Manchester United.

Speaking to the club website, Reds' centre-back Jarell Quansah admitted that it would take time to adapt to Arne Slot's tactics. He said (via Eurosport):

"It’s not going to click straight away. He's got a lot of new ideas that we have to get used to. Obviously a lot of the lads have played under the last manager for quite a while, so it’s a lot of adaptation. But it’ll come slowly but surely. There’s still a lot of work to be done on the training pitch and we’ll continue to do that."

Quansah remained quite hopeful, though, adding:

"I think the style of play the manager likes to play is very attractive, we can score some unbelievable goals. And it will get better and better hopefully. That’s what we’re striving for."

Liverpool will kick off their Premier League campaign against Ipswich Town on Saturday, August 17.
