Manchester United defender Harry Maguire will reportedly fight for his position at Old Trafford despite new central defensive signings this summer. The 31-year-old could be fairly low in the pecking order in the role after the Red Devils brought in Leny Yoro.

They also look poised to complete the signing of Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt. This could have proved extremely troublesome for Maguire, but with Yoro injured, there is a chance that he could start the Premier League season.

Regardless, the England international's wishes to continue at Old Trafford could reportedly result in the Red Devils triggering a year's extension in his contract. This is according to talkSPORT, who also claim that Maguire thinks he will be given his fair share of opportunities this season.

Currently, the former Leicester City star has a year left on his deal, and the Red Devils will not want to lose him for free next summer. Therefore, it is integral that they choose to utilise the year's extension.

With Manchester United yet to announce the Dutchman's signing, Maguire could start the Premier League season next to Lisandro Martinez. Erik ten Hag's men play their first match of the new league campaign against Fulham on Friday (August 16).

With multiple injury issues in this position last season, Maguire played 31 matches across competitions, bagging four goals and two assists. He was among the better players in a struggling team that finished eighth in the English top-flight.

To date, the Englishman has made 207 appearances across competitions for the Manchester side, bagging 11 goals and seven assists.

Former Arsenal forward Theo Walcott lavished praise on incoming Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt. He also stated that he would have loved to see the Netherlands international sign for the Gunners.

However, the 25-year-old has reportedly undergone a medical on Monday (August 12) and is set to be announced as a Manchester United player. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, Walcott said (via Metro):

"So yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing what he is going to provide at United. He's better than what they've currently got."

While representing Bayern Munich, De Ligt played 73 matches across competitions, bagging five goals and two assists for the Bavarians. He's also made 45 appearances across competitions for his national team, for whom he's netted twice to date.
