Liverpool suffer blow as possible Mohamed Salah replacement

Liverpool are set to suffer a major blow in their pursuit of Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, who was reportedly identified as the long-term successor of Mohamed Salah. As claimed by Fabrizio Romano on X, the England international is set to sign a new deal at St. James' Park.

As claimed by Romano, the 23-year-old's new contract at the Tyneside club will be valid until the summer of 2030. The former Everton star was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool in the summer but Newcastle United managed to retain his services.

Gordon has been excellent for Newcastle United since his reported £45 million switch from Everton in January 2023. The fleet-footed attacker has scored 15 goals and provided 11 assists in 72 appearances for Eddie Howe's side.

The England international's exploits have not been overlooked as he has been the subject of interest from several major European clubs. Liverpool, however, looked like the side with the most concrete interest in the pacey winger.

The Reds reportedly offered the Magpies £45 million plus Joe Gomez in exchange for Gordon's signature. Newcastle struggled to comply with profit and sustainability regulations but held onto Gordon by selling other assets.

Gordon was once in the youth ranks of Liverpool but was released at an early age and later made his name at Everton. A versatile attacker who can play on either flank and as a No. 9, the 23-year-old has won six caps for England.

The Merseyside giants could have a major void to fill next summer with Mohamed Salah's contract set for expiry. The Egyptian has been sensational for the Reds since his reported £34 million switch from AS Roma in 2017.

Salah has established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League. He has scored 216 goals and provided 93 assists in 357 appearances across competitions for the Reds.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp linked with a return to management

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been reportedly identified as a potential candidate to take over from Simone Inzaghi at Inter Milan. As reported by InterLive, the Nerazzurri could lose their manager to Manchester United if the Red Devils decide to sack Erik ten Hag.

Ten Hag's future at Old Trafford reportedly hangs in the balance following the Red Devils' dismal start to the season. Inzaghi, who led Inter Milan to the Serie A title last season, is reportedly Sir Jim Ratcliffe's top choice to replace the Dutchman.

Inter, on the other hand, are reportedly eyeing an ambitious swoop for Jurgen Klopp if they lose Inzaghi. Klopp stepped down from the manager's position at Liverpool at the end of last season after a memorable stint at Anfield.

The Merseyside giants enjoyed success under Klopp, with the German leading them to eight trophies in nine years. He ended the Reds' 30-year wait for their first Premier League title and led them to their sixth Champions League crown.
