Liverpool plotting move for former Chelsea defender next summer: Reports

Liverpool are reportedly keen to launch a move to sign former Chelsea star and Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi ahead of the next season.

Guehi, who left Chelsea for £20 million in 2021, was recently a part of a long-drawn-out transfer saga. The 24-year-old right-footed defender was allegedly subject to multiple offers from Newcastle United, but the Eagles refused to sell the Blues youth product for less than £75 million.

After Newcastle decided to walk away from negotiations, Eagles boss Oliver Glasner shared his two cents on the saga. He said (h/t Mirror):

"Yes, I can confirm that [Marc will stay]. But it was never really in doubt. First of all, congrats to Crystal Palace, the chairman and the everyone that they didn't give in. Especially after the transfer of Joachim Andersen, it was very important that Marc stays. Also thank you to Marc. We were always very close and talking a lot. All the rumours didn't influence his performance and his mood."

Now, according to Mirror, Liverpool are hoping to reignite their interest in Guehi next summer after deeming the defender to be too costly this year. They were interested in the ex-Chelsea star, but decided against launching a move this summer owing to their existing defensive depth.

Guehi, whose current contract is set to run out in June 2026, has made 114 appearances across all competitions for the Eagles. He has found the back of the net five times and laid out two assists for his club so far.

Ex-Chelsea star backs Liverpool to emerge victorious in upcoming away league match

In his column for BBC, former Chelsea star Chris Sutton predicted a 2-1 triumph for the Reds against Manchester United this Sunday. He wrote:

"Manchester United got the better of Liverpool on [one out of three] occasions last year. They won [4-3] in the FA Cup [quarter-final match last season] and you're sort of scratching your head about how they won that particular one."

Sutton, who scored thrice in 39 games for Chelsea as a player, added:

"Liverpool under Arne Slot are not so sort of heavy metal. Whatever I predict about Manchester United, I get them wrong... I'm just resigned to the fact I cannot predict a Manchester United result. I'm going to say Liverpool to beat them [at Old Trafford]."

The Reds have registered two wins in their two opening league games this season, while United have won once and lost once this term so far.

The Merseyside outfit have recorded five wins, four draws, and just one loss in their last 10 Premier League outings against Erik ten Hag's side.
