Liverpool eye move for defender with £86 million release clause: Reports

Arne Slot
Arne Slot's side are yet to bring in a new player this summer.

Liverpool are allegedly keen to launch a permanent move to sign Benfica defender Antonio Silva in the ongoing summer transfer window.

The Reds, who conceded 64 goals in 58 games in all competitions past campaign, are believed to be on the lookout for a top centre-back. They lost Joel Matip at the end of the player's deal earlier in June.

Now, according to GiveMeSport, Liverpool are currently keeping tabs on Silva with the intention of signing him this summer. However, the player's £86 million release clause could prove to be a major hurdle.

Silva, whose current contract will run out in June 2027, has cemented himself as a crucial starter for Benfica since his debut in 2022. He has netted seven goals in 94 total appearances for the Portuguese side.

The Reds, who are yet to sign a single player this summer, are also monitoring VfL Wolfsburg centre-back Maxence Lacroix. They have also been linked with Chelsea star Levi Colwill for a while, but the Anfield club believe an exit for the Blues star is currently not on the cards.

Liverpool retain interest in English forward

Speaking to GiveMeSport, acclaimed reporter Fabrizio Romano suggested that the Reds could launch a move to sign Newcastle United star Anthony Gordon later this month. He said:

"If they drop the price [for Gordon] at Newcastle, that could still be a possibility, I think, for Liverpool in the final weeks of the summer transfer window. But it's not something that I'm hearing is now really imminent, because there is still no bid to Newcastle. There is still no fresh club to club conversation."

Shedding more light on the winger's current situation, Romano added:

"So, we have to see what happens in kind of domino players. But, at the moment, is not something really imminent and we also have to respect Newcastle because they want to keep Anthony Gordon at the club. So, it's not going to be easy at all, but the appreciation [from the Reds' camp] is 100% confirmed."

Gordon, who left Everton to join Newcastle in a potential £45 million move in 2023, has cemented himself as one of England's best wide operators of late. He bagged 12 goals and provided 11 assists in 48 appearances across competitions for Eddie Howe's side last term.

In comparison, Liverpool winger Luis Diaz scored 13 goals and laid out five assists in 51 matches across all competitions for Arne Slot's outfit.
