Liverpool dealt transfer blow as Premier League rival make fresh bid to sign Euro 2024 star: Reports

Arne Slot
Arne Slot's side are keen to bolster their defence this summer.

Newcastle United have reportedly lodged a third bid in an attempt to lure Liverpool-linked defender Marc Guehi away from Crystal Palace.

Guehi, who rose through Chelsea's youth ranks, has popped up as one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons. The 24-year-old has made 111 appearances across all competitions for his team, recording five goals and two assists.

Now, according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg, Newcastle have tabled a third bid to acquire Guehi's services this summer. Palace, on the other hand, are open to selling their star for £65 million.

The Magpies, who roped in defender Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer earlier this July, allegedly offered £50 million last week. They would likely offer the UEFA Euro 2024 star a pay hike should he join them.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are reportedly keeping close tabs on other defenders apart from Guehi. They have been linked with Antonio Silva, Maxence Lacroix, and Levi Colwill, according to a GiveMeSport report.

Liverpool teenager hailed after friendly goal

Earlier this Sunday (August 11), Liverpool registered a 4-1 pre-season friendly win over Sevilla at Anfield. After Diogo Jota's opener and Luis Diaz's brace, Trey Nyoni scored a fine goal in the 67th minute.

After the end of the Reds' pre-season encounter, Reds centre-back Jarell Quansah lavished praise on the midfielder. He told club media:

"He has stepped up this pre-season and showed a lot of quality. Because of some of the players returning from internationals [later], he has been able to step up and really show his confidence. You saw that today in the finish, it was unbelievable."

Nyoni, who left Leicester City's academy last year, has made just one appearance for the Reds so far. The 17-year-old has netted five goals and laid out one assist in 23 outings for his club's age-group teams.

Quansah, who made his Liverpool debut last August, concluded:

"It [being involved in pre-season] helped me so much [last year], just to be given the opportunity and different things like that. Just to build confidence for yourself and show you can play at the top level and show you can play with men. I think it can give a lot of lads inspiration, to see what some of the lads are doing."

The Merseyside outfit will open their 2024-25 Premier League season with a game at promoted club Ipswich Town on Saturday (August 17).
