Liverpool asked to pay £85 million for 23-year-old Premier League star

Liverpool were reportedly offered the opportunity to sign Anthony Gordon for a £85 million fee by Newcastle United. However, the Reds were not prepared to spend such an astronomical fee on the young winger.

Gordon was strongly linked with a move to his boyhood club Liverpool in June, with Newcastle United in dire need of raising cash. The Magpies needed to offload players to comply with Profit and Sustainability Regulations (PSR) and reportedly made Gordon available for £100 million.

They ended up selling Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson ahead of June's PSR deadline. it has now been reported that the Tynesiders quoted an asking price of £85 million for Gordon amid interest from the Reds.

As quoted by Give Me Sport's journalist Ben Jacobs via TBR Football, new Reds boss Arne Slot deemed the asking price too high.

"Naturally, there is an element of rewriting when any deal doesn’t come off, and Newcastle sources maintain it was Liverpool who reached out. But sources close to Liverpool insist they were presented with the chance to sign the 23-year-old for close to £85 million," Jacobs said.
"Gordon, for his part, was keen on returning to his boyhood club, but nothing progressed. Although the figure quoted was around £15million less than the £100million Liverpool believed Newcastle would ask for, it was still deemed too high. Liverpool remain admirers of Gordon, but won’t try to sign him unless the price drops significantly." he added.

It remains to be seen whether the Merseyside giants keep pursuing a deal for Gordon who was once a part of their academy. The 23-year-old has established himself in the Premier League with Everton and Newcastle United.

Gordon enjoyed a brilliant season with Newcastle United in 2023-24, scoring 12 goals and providing 11 assists in 48 appearances across competitions. He is currently on international duty with England in Euro 2024 but has played just one minute in the continental competition.

New Liverpool boss Arne Slot hails his predecessor Jurgen Klopp

New Liverpool manager Arne Slot has lavished praise on Jurgen Klopp, whom he replaced at the club's hot seat. The Dutchman has massive shoes to fill, having been chosen as the successor of one of the finest managers of the modern era.

When asked about Klopp's impact at the Merseyside club, Slot lauded the German for what he did for the Reds. He also revealed that he has spoken with Klopp after being appointed his successor.

Slot was quoted as saying by Liverpool's official website:

"When Jurgen arrived he said he was the normal one, but what made him special was what he left behind. What he did for this club was more than normal. We've spoken about many things, but they stay between us. Him singing for me was special... Fans already singing for me is a good start."

Klopp cemented his legacy at Anfield after being appointed Liverpool manager in October 2015. He successfully revived the club and made them a European powerhouse once again. Klopp helped the Reds win one Premier League and one Champions League title, among other honors.
