Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen are interested in signing former Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip, according to Sky Sports reporter Patrick Berger. The 32-year-old recently departed Anfield as a free agent earlier this summer and is still looking for a new club.

Matip was an integral part of the Reds' successful run under Jurgen Klopp for eight years, making 201 appearances across all competitions. He formed a formidable partnership with Virgil van Dijk at the heart of the Reds' defense, helping them win six trophies, including the Premier League title and UEFA Champions League.

Following their impressive unbeaten Bundesliga run last season, Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly on the hunt for an experienced central defender. Berger tweeted:

"Sky Info: Bayer Leverkusen is interested in Joel Matip (32). The defender is without a club, his contract with Liverpool FC was not renewed after eight years. The defender and his management are said to have been contacted. The #Werkself would like to bring in an experienced central defender, which is why Mats Hummels was also considered."

Matip was out for most of last season (missing 37 games) due to an ACL tear. However, when fit, he can be one of the most reliable centre-backs in Europe - which would be a massive boost for Xabi Alonso and Co.

Alexis Mac Allister's father provides Liverpool transfer update amid interest from Real Madrid

Carlos Mac Allister has clarified Alexis Mac Allister's future at Anfield after the latter was linked with a move to Real Madrid earlier this summer.

However, following Argentina's triumph at the 2024 Copa America, he stated that Mac Allister would continue at Merseyside next season. He stated (via Liverpool ECHO):

“Alexis is performing very well at Liverpool, and this is the important thing to say at the moment. There are no negotiations from Real Madrid with Alexis, and the player will continue with Liverpool next season. If future offers arrive to sign Alexis, we will discuss them with Liverpool's management first."

Mac Allister has flourished at Merseyside since joining the Reds last summer from Brighton & Hove Albion for a reported fee of £35 million. The 25-year-old showed great versatility playing as a No. 6 and No. 8, amassing seven goals and as many assists in 46 appearances across all competitions.
