Real Madrid are reportedly close to agreeing on a new contract with full-back Ferland Mendy. He recently entered the last year of his deal and the club were at risk of losing him for nothing next year.

That, however, doesn't seem like a possibility anymore. As per Spanish journalist Jose Felix Diaz (via @MadridXtra on X), Mendy is happy in Madrid and close to penning a fresh contract in the coming days.

Zinedine Zidane has apparently played a big role in his renewal, having signed the player for €50 million from Lyon in 2019. With 170 appearances and 10 trophies to his name, he has had a fruitful stay with Los Blancos so far.

Mendy has been competing with Fran Garcia for a starting berth at left-back. Despite the added competition from the Spaniard, the 29-year-old saw plenty of playing time last season, featuring in 37 matches across competitions and keeping 15 clean sheets. Mendy was also picked for France's Euro 2024 campaign, but was an unused substitute throughout the tournament.

As per Capology, Mendy is currently earning just over €200,000 in gross weekly wages and is not among the top 10 earners at the club. It remains to be seen if his salary will increase if and when he pens a deal at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Reports about Ferland Mendy's impending contract renewal at Real Madrid could lead some to believe that it is related to their supposed pursuit of Alphonso Davies. The Canadian star is in the final year of his deal at Bayern Munich, with a renewal still nowhere in sight.

Davies has been heavily linked to Real Madrid in recent weeks, but no move has materialized so far. A report from Spanish outlet Relevo.com (via 90min) has now claimed that Los Blancos are unwilling to pay the €50 million Bayern are demanding for him.

It will be interesting to see how that story plays out if Mendy pens a new deal. Fran Garcia, 24, has proved his worth as a squad player and still has three years left on his contract.

Davies, meanwhile, has been Bayern's go-to man at left-back. Capable of playing anywhere down the left flank, the 23-year-old registered three goals and six assists in 42 games across competitions last season, keeping 13 clean sheets.
