Former Chelsea defender William Gallas shared his opinion on the Blues' chances of finishing in the top-four of the Premier League this season. The Frenchman made 225 appearances for Chelsea from 2001 to 2006.

The west London club finished sixth in the Premier League standings last season with 63 points while ending up trophyless and qualifying for the 2024-25 UEFA Conference League.

When asked if the Blues can make it to the top four in the upcoming season, William Gallas told Genting Casino:

"Chelsea will have to improve on last season, but from what I’ve seen they might end up in fifth or sixth."
"For a club like Chelsea, that is unacceptable. Chelsea have played to win the Premier League for so long, fighting for the top four shows there is a big problem. They need trophies and not just trying to qualify to play for trophies. That’s why I’m worried about Chelsea and it’s not only me, all former Chelsea players are feeling the same way," the Frenchman added.

William Gallas arrived at Stamford Bridge in 2001 after playing for Marseille for four years. During his five-year tenure at the Blues, he netted 14 goals and provided eight assists across all competitions.

William Gallas on Chelsea's pre-season form

In the conversation with Genting Casino, William Gallas also shared his opinion on the Blues' pre-season form. The west London club, who appointed Enzo Maresca as their new head coach this summer, have played three friendly matches ahead of the 2024-2025 season. Their first fixture was against Welsh side Wrexham A.F.C, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

The Blues were then pitted against Scottish club Celtic in their second friendly, where they lost 4-1. In their following clash against Liga MX side Club América, they registered their first victory (3-0) of the pre-season.

When asked if the Blues' pre-season form is a concern ahead of the new season, William Gallas told Genting Casino:

"Even though it’s preseason, I’m concerned about Chelsea and I’m concerned when I look at the squad."
"Despite all the money they’ve spent, the squad still isn’t good enough to qualify for the Champions League, they have so many players and they still need more quality," he added.

The Blues will face reigning Premier League champions Manchester City in their next friendly match on Saturday, August 3, at Ohio Stadium. Enzo Maresca's squad will also face Pep Guardiola's men in their first match of the Premier League this season on August 18 at Stamford Bridge.
