Spanish publication Marca have recognized Lionel Messi as the greatest footballer in history, surpassing several legendary names. The Argentine legend received the honor at the Chase Stadium in Miami on Thursday, October 17.

Throughout his illustrious career, Messi has shattered numerous records. He has won eight Ballons d’Or and three The Best FIFA Men’s Player awards, more than any other player in history. Additionally, he holds the record for the most assists in history and has won the most trophies of any player, 46, including the MLS Supporters’ Shield he recently won with Inter Miami.

Following Messi in Marca’s ranking is his long-time rival, Cristiano Ronaldo. The publication also honored Pele, Alfredo Di Stefano, Diego Maradona, and Johan Cruyff in their list of all-time greats.

While there has never been any doubt about Messi’s brilliance on the pitch, questions have often been raised about his contributions for Argentina.

However, he has put those debates to rest by winning four consecutive trophies with his country, including the Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The 37-year-old scored a hat-trick and provided two assists for Argentina in a 6-0 triumph against Bolivia during the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.

While discussing his future with Argentina, the former Barcelona star mentioned that he hasn’t set a specific date for his retirement. However, he acknowledged that he could be playing the "last games" of his career.

“I didn’t set any date or deadline about my future. I’m just enjoying all this. I am more emotional than ever and taking all the love from the people because I know these can be my last games. Being surrounded by younger teammates, given my age, makes me feel like a kid again. I find myself doing silly things because I feel so comfortable. As long as I maintain that feeling and can continue contributing to the team, I plan to be here enjoying [the national team],” he said (via Forbes).

For now, Lionel Messi’s focus will shift to the MLS, as he is set to return to Miami for the crucial playoff matches.
