Manchester United fans took to Twitter to express their concern with the side's starting lineup in the Community Shield to face Manchester City on Saturday (August 10). The supporters were worried about the backline, wondering why youngster Harry Amass was not given a chance.

One fan typed:

"This is a disgrace. Why can't Harry Amass start. You want us to beat City without a natural LB?"

While another echoed similar thoughts, adding:

"Maguire Evans CB pairing!
No Amass in the squad !
Its so over"

Another fan had this to type:

"Wheres Harry Amas?? That lad deserved a start today."

While another tweeted:

"Why not just let Amass start todays game"

Eyebrows were certainly raised when Erik ten Hag named the side to face Manchester City. The back four, consisting of Lisandro Martinez, Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, and Diogo Dalot seems to lack a natural left-back.

The departure of Raphael Varane and the injury suffered by summer signing Leny Yoro has seemingly left the side short in central defense. However, they have completed a move for Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt, who is expected to undergo a medical soon, according to The Athletic's David Ornstein.

Further puzzling for fans was the absence of any defender from the bench, including youngster Harry Amass. The academy graduate was well-involved in the side's pre-season tour and looked solid but has been omitted completely from the matchday squad.

Manchester United have reportedly completed the deal to sign Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich. According to The Athletic's David Ornstein, the two players are expected to join the Red Devils soon.

The side will pay a fee of €45 million plus €5 million in add-ons for the Dutchman. He made 30 appearances last season, bagging two goals and one assist while falling down the pecking order behind Dayot Upamecano and Kim Min-jae.

Mazraoui is also set to join de Ligt in the deal, with Manchester United forking up €15 million plus €5 million in add-ons. However, the deal for the Moroccan is contingent on Aaron Wan-Bissaka's situation, who is close to joining West Ham United.

The arrival of de Ligt will be a welcome boost to a United side that have struggled with injuries to central defenders. The 24-year-old will serve as ample cover alongside Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire to fill in the spots at centre-back.
