Former Premier League striker Alan Shearer predicted the result of the clash between Manchester United and Liverpool

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has predicted a score-draw for the high-octane Premier League clash between Manchester United and Liverpool (September 1). The 54-year-old claimed that United usually reserve their best performances for the "biggest games", and could put up a good fight against their bitter rivals.

In his column for Metro, Shearer noted that he didn't see much of a change for United from the 2023-24 campaign. He wrote:

"I haven’t seen a lot that’s changed from last year at Manchester United, and I know they’ve still got injuries, they’re also bringing in a new midfielder in Manuel Ugarte but not much has changed in terms of their performances against Fulham (1-0 win) and especially, against Brighton (2-1 loss)."

Conversely, Shearer praised Liverpool for their resilient performances in their first two EPL fixtures, writing:

"Liverpool’s opener against Ipswich was a tough one – they were under immense pressure in the first half but the way they came out in the second half and battered them in the end was impressive. The result against Brentford showed how strong and powerful they are too."

Finally, Shearer dropped his prediction for the game, writing:

"There’ll be goals in the game and I think it could be a score-draw at Old Trafford on Sunday as I’ve mentioned Man United can save their best for the biggest games, and this is one of those."

Alan Shearer details the strengths and weaknesses of Manchester United and Liverpool weighed up against each other

Premier League icon Alan Shearer delivered a detailed analysis of Manchester United and Liverpool's game-plans ahead of their clash at Old Trafford (September 1).

The record EPL goalscorer (260 goals) described United's counter-attacking style of play under Erik ten Hag and cautioned Liverpool to be wary against it. He wrote:

"Man United are a better team when teams are attacking them, and with the pace that they have up-front, they can really hurt you when sides leave space, we saw that against Brighton despite not getting the result. If Liverpool are going to attack, they will have to be aware of that going the other way."

On the other hand, he warned Manchester United to focus on reducing their defensive lapses against a well-oiled, firing Liverpool attack. He wrote:

"Ultimately when you look at Man United last weekend against Brighton and the lapses in concentration defensively, if they don’t improve that then Liverpool’s front line will have huge success."

Manchester United will host Liverpool in a fiery Premier League fixture at Old Trafford on September 1.
