Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has expressed concern over the state of the Blues' squad. The Frenchman suggested that they still need to add quality in order to qualify for the Champions League.

Gallas said (via Genting Casino):

“Even though it’s preseason, I’m concerned about Chelsea and I’m concerned when I look at the squad."
“Despite all the money they’ve spent, the squad still isn’t good enough to qualify for the Champions League, they have so many players and they still need more quality.”

Chelsea have endured two difficult seasons under the new ownership led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. They have finished both seasons outside the top four, including a dreadful 12th-placed finish in the 2022-23 season.

This comes despite a record spending spree that has totalled well over £1 billion to bring in players. They have remained steadfast in their transfer strategy of signing young players with high potential over proven talent, an idea that could pay off in the future.

The 2024-25 campaign could prove to be a pivotal one for Chelsea under new manager Enzo Maresca. They will hope to improve on their sixth-placed finish from last season while also looking to go deep in cup tournaments and the UEFA Conference League.

The London side have been extremely active in the transfer market this season, having already completed seven signings. The likes of Marc Guiu, Estevao Willian, Renato Veiga, and Tosin Adarabioyo have been added to the squad.

Premier League club enter race for Chelsea star amidst negotiations with Serie A side

Aston Villa have joined Napoli in the race to sign Chelsea star Romelu Lukaku. According to Italian outlet Il Mattino, the Birmingham-based side are looking to sign the Belgian striker.

According to reports, the 31-year-old doesn't have a future at Stamford Bridge, with the side keen to sell the forward. He joined the side in the summer of 2021 for a reported £97.5 million. After a difficult first season, he spent the next two campaigns on loan with Inter Milan and Roma.

Another move to the Serie A is on the cards this season, with a permanent move to Napoli reportedly close. A possible reunion with former manager Antonio Conte has been an attractive option but the Serie A side are yet to reach an agreement with Chelsea over a fee. Thus, Aston Villa have entered the race in the hopes of reaching a quick agreement.
