Manchester United legend wants Pep Guardiola to manage England

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes would like Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola to take over the England job. Former head coach Gareth Southgate left his position after leading the team to two consecutive Euro finals.

However, Southgate was unable to drive the Three Lions to the European Championship title as they lost to Italy and Spain, respectively, in the two finals. The former England player managed the side for eight years, taking charge of four major tournaments, but couldn't end England's search for a trophy since 1966.

Sky Sports have reported that FA were looking at Graham Potter and Mauricio Pochettino as Southgate's replacement. However, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Pep Guardiola is the right candidate.

The legendary Spanish manager has notably led Manchester City to win four Premier League titles in a row, an unprecedented achievement. Scholes wants England to bring this trophy-winning mentality to the national team, as he told Sky Sports:

"These group of players are the best we've had for a while... technically very good, can keep the ball all day long. They just suffered a couple of errors, I suppose, they couldn't really score and create as many chances as they would have liked.
"But I think somebody like... I don't want to say it, but somebody like Pep would get these players over the line. If that's possible, I don't know but I think he'll be the ideal man to take this team forward."

Pep Guardiola's focus, though, will be on Manchester City, where he remains under contract, and could potentially break even more records next season.

Pep Guardiola reveals excitement for new season amid links to England job

There have been rumors linking Pep Guardiola to the England job, with Manchester United legend Paul Scholes putting his name forward openly. However, the Spanish manager is looking forward to the upcoming season at Manchester City.

Notably, he is in the final season of his contract at the Etihad, where he has been widely successful, even leading them to a continental treble. Speaking in a press conference, though, he revealed his excitement for the new season, stating (via Football365):

I’m really excited for this season that’s coming. I’m really happy here. Like every season I need the break, I need it definitely, but after that I charge my batteries and I have the same energy like usual and I know the competition is coming, I will be who we are, who I am. I’m completely focused on that.”

Pep Guardiola will be hoping that he can win more trophies with Manchester City, having led them to 17 trophies already since he moved in 2016.
