Former Scotland striker Ally McCoist reckons Liverpool should consider jettisoning striker Mohamed Salah if he's not convinced with the club's project. The 32-year-old has been at Anfield since the summer of 2017.
Since arriving from AS Roma, the diminutive Egyptian has been a key first-team player for the Reds, contributing an impressive 211 goals and 89 assists in 349 games across competitions, all under former manager Jurgen Klopp.
However, there have been reports of Salah not being fully committed to the club's project under new boss Arne Slot. With one year left in his current deal, McCoist said that the Reds should look to cash in on him if that's indeed the case, telling talkSPORT Bet (via DAZN):
“You need to get a response from him and find out exactly where he is mentally, because if he's not happy, you have to cash in. It's simple. If he is not 100% committed to moving forward with the club and the new manager, then you've got to cash in now.
“From Liverpool's point of view, you would hope he would say he loves where he is and can see himself at Anfield for the next two or three years. His form may have been a little bit indifferent last season, but he still scored plenty of goals. He's been one of the greatest players in the Premier League."
Acknowledging Salah's contribution to the Reds over the years, McCoist continued:
“The key players for Liverpool are Alisson, Virgil van Dijk and Salah. It goes without saying how pivotal and important they have been. And ideally, you don't want to be losing any of them.
"But they'll know within 90 seconds of the conversation with Salah whether they should cash in on him or not.”
The Egyptian has been named in the Reds' squad for their ongoing pre-season tour of the US.
How Mohamed Salah fared for Liverpool last season?
Liverpool attacker Mohamed Salah enjoyed a solid 2023-24 season in what turned out to be legendary boss Jurgen Klopp's last campaign in charge of the club since arriving in 2015.
In 44 games across competitions, he bagged 25 goals and 14 assists. That included 18 goals and 10 assists in 32 games in the Premier League, where the Reds finished third, behind Manchester City and Arsenal.
Mohamed Salah also contributed five goals and four assists in nine outings in the UEFA Europa League, where Klopp's side fell to eventual winners Atalanta in the quarter-final. His two other goals respectively came in the FA Cup and the EFL Cup, which the Reds won.
