Peter Crouch says he's surprised by rumors linking Liverpool star with an exit from the club

Peter Crouch is trying to figure out why Joe Gomez is being linked with a move away from Liverpool. The English defender wasn't named in Arne Slot's squad for the Reds' 2-0 win against Ipswich Town in their season opener today (August 17).

Gomez's absence was explained on TNT Sports before the game. Paul Joyce's report in The Times was cited, and he claims that the 27-year-old is studying his transfer options. This was put to Crouch, and the former England striker was asked if he was surprised:

"A little bit yeah. I just think he’s a great man to have around the squad. He’s never let the team down."

Gomez was a utility man for Jurgen Klopp during the German coach's era at Anfield. His versatility was hugely beneficial last season as he played right-back, left-back, center-back, and even defensive midfield.

Crouch thinks Gomez might be the one considering parting ways rather than the club:

"You look at the injuries last year and players like that had to come in and cover the first-team players if you like. He’s given a great account of himself at Liverpool, so maybe it’s his choice to move on."

Gomez has received plenty of interest, including from the Premier League. Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Fulham, and Chelsea are all believed to be interested in the 15-cap England international. He's also on the Saudi Pro League's radar, and a Liverpool departure is viewed as likely before the transfer window slams shut.

Former Liverpool boss Klopp emphasized the influence Gomez had on his team when speaking last season. He talked up his development and adaptability while speaking to the club's media:

"I think this season is the most consistent he played, especially because of [playing] different position...I think it developed his game massively (playing in different positions)."

Gomez's versatility earned him a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad for Euro 2024 earlier this summer. He'd spent a lengthy spell out of the national team picture, but his consistent club-level performances won the Three Lions coaching staff over.

The London-born defender has three years left on his contract. He joined the Merseysiders from Charlton Athletic in 2015 for £3.5 million. The Englishman has won eight major trophies at Anfield.
