Paul Scholes asks ‘what is he?’ after watching Manchester United star in action

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes is yet to be convinced by Joshua Zirkzee, following a barren run in front of goal. The Dutch striker joined the Red Devils from Bologna this summer and started his tenure with a debut goal against Fulham on opening day.

Since then, however, Zirkzee has failed to find the back of the net in his next nine games. Manchester United have also struggled this season under Erik ten Hag, winning just three of their 11 games across competitions.

Speaking on SuperSport Studio after the 0-0 draw against Aston Villa on Sunday, October 6, Scholes insisted that the current striker options at Old Trafford aren't good enough.

"In forward areas especially, I just don’t think the quality is there. We go back to the most successful teams, they’re capable of scoring goals. What have we scored? Five goals in seven games," said Scholes.

He continued:

"Now we had three or four forwards who could get you 20 goals so you’re looking at 80 goals a season there and I just don’t see that in the forward line at Manchester United."

He concluded:

"Look, [Rasmus] Hojlund does alright but is he gonna score you 20 goals? I don’t think so. Zirkzee… what is he? Is he a No.9 or a No.10? Is he going to get you 20 goals? I don’t think so. I think they’re relying more on hope than actual proven quality and they spent so much money as well."

Manchester United have scored 18 goals in 11 games across competitions, seven of which were scored against Barnsley in the EFL Cup third round last month.

Could Joshua Zirkzee leave Manchester United in January?

Joshua Zirkzee was outstanding for Bologna last season under Thiago Motta, registering 12 goals and seven assists from 37 games. His efforts prompted Manchester United to break the bank for the Dutchman over the summer.

While Zirkzee has failed to replicate that form at Old Trafford, his stock remains high. Juventus are reportedly eyeing the player with interest and are considering a move at the turn of the year.

Motta took charge at Turin over the summer and is apparently not too impressed by Dusan Vlahovic. He wants a reunion with Zirkzee and the Bianconeri are ready to grant his wish.

However, the Red Devils are likely to be patient with the Dutch forward. The Premier League giants have modified their transfer approach under new minority owner INEOS. They are working to get the club back to their best and Zirkzee is expected to be part of their long-term plans.
