"Nobody from Liverpool has told me that bridges have been burned" - Journalist provides Zubimendi update after summer transfer snub

Journalist David Lynch has hinted that Liverpool could try to sign Martin Zubimendi in the January transfer window. He has reported that the Spaniard has not signed a new contract yet, and the possibility of the Reds making another move is not ruled out.

On Anfield Agenda's YouTube channel, Lynch stated that Real Sociedad not having the best of starts to the season could impact the transfer. He added that new contract talks are yet to happen between La Real and Zubimendi. He said (via The Anfield Talk on Twitter):

“He still hasn’t signed that contract, so keep an eye on that one—come January, he could have a decisive moment knowing where Sociedad’s season is heading. Nobody from Liverpool has told me that bridges have been burned.”

Liverpool were ready to activate Zubimendi's release clause in the summer, but the midfielder opted to stay at the La Liga side. He was also a target for Manchester City and Barcelona, but he chose not to leave his boyhood club.

Real Sociedad confirm no contract talks with Liverpool target

Real Sociedad have confirmed that new contract talks are yet to begin with Martin Zubimendi. Club president Jokin Aperribay has stated that the midfielder made the decision himself to reject a move away from the club as he wanted to stay. He said (via Football365):

“There has been no conversation with Zubimendi to renew his contract. There hasn’t been one now and there hasn’t been one before. He didn’t put any conditions on us. He understood the situation and knew that it was a market in which some players were already going to leave, and he understood that it was time to stay at Real Sociedad. He has not made it a condition for us to renew nor have we talked about it. The conversation with Martin was short and quick.”

Zubimendi also talked about La Real's indifferent start to the 2024-25 La Liga season. The side are currently 16th in the league table with just one win in seven matches. He said:

“It’s true that right now we are not at one hundred percent. We have new players who have barely trained with us and other important ones have left. As soon as we find the right mix, things will be fine. This project that has been going on for years. We have been in Europe for five years and the demands are high – not only in the club, but also from the people. We hope to meet those expectations.”

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing a midfielder this January as they could not get their top targets in the summer.
