Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has reacted to news of Sir Alex Ferguson's departure as the Red Devils' ambassador at the end of the current season. The legendary coach served as global ambassador and club director following his managerial retirement in 2013.
However, it looks as though Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co., have decided to cut down on costs through this move. Pointing out the fact that the club's most-priced asset could be removed from the position, Ferdinand wrote on his X account (formerly Twitter) after learning of the news:
"If Sir Alex can be taken out, then NO ONE IS SAFE at @ManUtd. Anyone can get it now. Ineos sending a message to ANYONE at the club?!?"
Of course, it isn't very clear as to who the former Premier League defender is claiming could be on his or her way out. Many would assume that the remarks are pointing towards Erik ten Hag, the current manager of Manchester United, who has come under serious pressure this campaign.
The Dutch tactician's team hasn't enjoyed the best of starts to the 2024/25 season, placed 14th in the Premier League at the moment. They've racked up just eight points in their first seven English top-flight fixtures.
This is worrying for Ten Hag after the Red Devils finished eighth in the Premier League last year. However, many consider that the ex-Ajax coach saved his job by winning the FA Cup at the end of the season.
Once club action returns this weekend following the international break, Manchester United host Brentford at Old Trafford for a league tie on Saturday (October 19).
Paul Gascoigne wants to see Sir Alex Ferguson replace Erik ten Hag at Manchester United
Former Tottenham Hotspur star Paul Gascoigne wishes for Sir Alex Ferguson to take over from Erik ten Hag at Manchester United and remain in charge for a season at Old Trafford.
The Scottish coach was extremely successful during his managerial tenure, winning the Premier League 13 times and the Champions League twice, among other honors. Speaking to SportsCasting, Gascoigne said (via Football365):
"Looking at Ten Hag, I feel sorry for him a bit. I would love Alex Ferguson to take over for one season and just see what he could do with those players because I think some of them take the p*** out of Ten Hag."
Ten Hag came to Manchester United in the summer of 2022 and has remained in charge for 125 matches across competitions. He's delivered an FA Cup and a Carabao Cup each at Old Trafford.
